It’s quite a hiatus since my last finds post, but life has been busy tossing things at me to throw my routines off balance: a road-trip vacation, a new job, and the arrival of spring. I’m attempting to resume this habit now, as a means to track things that have really piqued my interest of late. Here goes, some of the interesting finds from the last few weeks:
- Netflix is great for binge watching movies and TV on your own individual schedule. But with Netflix releasing their all their new episodes for a season of a show at the same time, I totally agree with this author’s view that this decision ruins one of the best thing about consuming new television—being able to talk about each episode with others as water cooler talk. Shows that become cultural touchpoints in terms of media coverage and pop culture references (e.g. House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) are ironically not consumed together as a community. https://medium.com/message/how-netflix-broke-the-unbreakable-spoiler-alert-f0215bf930cf
- Of course there’s an app to help you pretend that you have a boyfriend/girlfriend by sending you texts and emails:http://digg.com/2015/my-month-with-an-invisible-girlfriend. The reality depicted in the movie Her isn’t that far off.
- This author was challenged to go a week without speaking or texting unless someone else initiated the conversation. Beyond the obvious observations about the impact the initial impressions it instilled in how others viewed her, there was this surprising realization:
I lost faith in many relationships and grew more attached to technology, where it was easier to control an imagined reality.
- With the premier of Game of Thrones season 5 happening tomorrow, all sorts of GoT stuff is popping up in the media. I admit, I had to laugh at this one where Seth Meyers brings Jon Snow to a dinner party: [su_youtube url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BabsgCQhpu4″ width=”480″ height=”300″]I can’t wait until the HBO show catches up to the books because I need someone to talk about the ending of Book 5! Let’s just a major character is seemingly killed off again!
